Goal One: Literacy
In concert with the district literacy curriculum adoption, Discovery will fully implement Making Meaning, Phonographix, and Words Their Way, as our literacy program.
Action Plan:
- In recognizing that the creation of a bookroom is an important component, we will create time for teachers to review their own collections and order necessary books to complete a greater selection. Explore funding sources for books (district funds, building funds, grants). Find a location for primary books central to those classrooms and a location for intermediate books, accessible to those classrooms.
- Work closely with the literacy specialist and the LAP teacher to serve at risk primary readers. Expand opportunities for struggling readers with designated funds from the district.
- Plan a Young Author’s Day for January, focusing on northwest authors, books, and stories. Featuring Seattle Children’s Theater, our students will be exposed to a historical dramatization of the Klondike Gold Rush. Our own professional story-teller, Nick Adams, will feature northwest authors in his story telling. Students will attend break out session where they will be able to create their own stories around the Northwest theme.
Staff Development:
-
Teachers will attend
district literacy training in June, 2006 as well as training offered
during the fall.
- The literacy coach will closely work with the staff in helping implement new adoption.
- Team meetings will offer an opportunity to discuss what is working and what additional support is needed. Teacher can share strategies and solutions.
Funding:
- The district is providing training in the new adoption.
- The district is providing funding for book room supplies (books).
- Struggling Student money will be used to pay staff to work with students before or after school and for para time for during school assistance. In addition we may be able to pay additional cert time during the day on an hourly basis.
- The VPO is providing the funds for our Young Author’s Day.
Goal Two: Technology
Use available technology to increase students learning and to help students meet the Peninsula School District technology competencies.
Action Plan:
- We will improve student achievement through the use of technology by fully implementing the district technology competencies at grade 5.
- Teachers in grades K-4 will take advantage of competency training as it comes available.
- As new document cameras are installed in K-2 classrooms, reassign document cameras we currently have to those teachers who do not have access to one.
- Increase the efficiency and organization of student work by creating student folder on the server. This would be a district task initially.
Staff Development:
- Teachers will attend grade level training offered by the district.
- Create time in the building plan for website searches to support the subject matter in the FOSS science kits.
- Continue to secure on-going website training with Ron Stark, especially as the websites become linked to the Discovery webpage.
Funding:
- The district funds will provide document camera for K-2 teachers.
- The district will provide funds for technology training.
- Approach the VPO about purchasing newer computers for the primary wing.
Goal Three: Differentiation
Recognizing that students all learn differently find ways to meet the individual needs of students through a variety of support models.
Action Plan:
- Support struggling students with a plan for each grade level that would be implemented by the end of fall quarter. This allows teachers time to get to know the students but provides ample time for support and intervention.
- Explore ways to provide more math computational support for students who struggle with the basic facts…….. i.e. math clubs, accelerated math practice, assigning tutors and parent volunteers
- Learn more about the Three Tiered model for differentiation.
- Provide sub time for teachers to meet with the principal and counselor at the beginning of the year and possibly again at the year’s end. The purpose of the meetings would be to review the class lists and identify students who are in need, either academically, socially, or emotionally.
Staff Development:
- If paras and parent helpers are to be used in the Struggling Student plan, provide training by teachers.
- Find a presenter, or a book that can be reviewed on the Three Tiered model.
Funding:
- Struggling Student support money will pay for the Struggling Student plan.
- Building BAAP money will pay for any presenters or additional training.
Goal Four: Climate
Discovery will support a climate that is warm and nurturing for all staff, students, and parents. We will work hard to respect and honor diversity and support differences in learning.
Action Plan:
- Using the Love and Logic philosophy, Discovery will develop our core beliefs to facilitate respectful interaction between children and their teachers or parents.
- Parenting classes on Love and Logic will be offered to parents during a seven week evening program. This will be taught by Niccole Griffin.
- Teachers will participate in a Book Study, Creating Classrooms Where Teachers Love to Teach and Students Love to Learn.
Staff Development:
- We will offer an overview of the philosophy and initial training at the staff retreat in August. Niccole Griffin, our counselor is a certified trainer.
- At scheduled staff meetings throughout the year, Love and Logic modules will be presented. Teachers will be encouraged to practice specific skills and bring their feedback on the success to the next staff meeting.
Funding:
- Books and CDs will be purchased with building fund for a summer book study.
- Niccole Griffin’s presentations will be funded by a combination of BAAP funds and personal BAAP time.
- LAP parent involvement money will be used to help purchase supplies for the parenting classes.
